What Would You Do If Bitten By A Black Widow?!

July 19th 2010 08:47

What would you do if a Black Widow Spider bit you? I wonder if most people are knowledgeable about how to handle a poisonous spider bite. Yesterday while in the garage I felt a sharp pain on my shin. As I looked down toward my leg, the stinging pain increased. I was wearing shorts and I could see an oval like swelling on the center of my leg. The swelling didn稚 freak me out but the visibility of my vein that seemed to be swelling or something did! Immediately I headed to the closest emergency room. My fear was that a black widow spider bit me. A few of these spiders were spotted on my property in the last few months. I was not bitten by a black widow, thank goodness. I was stung by some kind of insect, I did not see it but my body really did react. The ER personnel said the pain I felt was my body fighting against the poison that was injected into me, creepy.

Black Widow female spiders are poisonous. These spiders like dark places like woodpiles, tree stumps, or dark garages. This spider has characteristic orange, red, or yellow "hourglass" shape underneath it. Most Black Widow Spiders are 2 inches wide, but some are smaller. The spider bite can cause sharp, shooting pain up the limb, but it can also be painless. One or two red fang marks can be seen on the skin (see picture below). A bite could leave redness, tenderness, and a lump. Severe muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, or seizures could also occur. Do not risk it, stay clam and get medical care immediately, especially if body functions like breathing are distressed. According to WebMD, anti没enom medicine is available for severe cases. If you think you are bitten by a black widow take the spider with you to the hospital. Try to get look at the culprit if you can. This information will assist the doctors with treatment and identification.

As for me, I was given a technis shot, directed to ice and elevate my leg and take it easy. The ER personnel at the hospital told me that black widow bites are not fatal.

It was a scary situation, which forced me to investigate poisonous spiders and insects. Don稚 wait to get bitten to discover what kind of creatures are native to your region and what do if you happen to be bitten by one.
