what is there to say

Yesterday was a bad day.
Words so minor in compared to the magnitude of what happened. Many people died yesterday and like most people in Victoria someone I know lost their home.
It was a bad day.
How can words express what has just happened. In South Australia we have heat so bad that Koalas are climbing down out of trees and approaching people on the road.
And then yesterday so many people died I cannot even begin to express the size of this tragedy. And I won't put a number on it. Tommorow that number will be higher because more people will have died from a fire that burned us all.
I think that the only way that we can really express the impact of this moment in our history is to not use numbers 10 people die and we can put that in a box but a not speaking in numbers gives this event the gravitas that it deserves.
I found myself all day dwelling on comics and the internet and the latest movie news and you know what these were all distractions to avoid what had happened. It didnt really hit me the impact had no weight until I heard that the fire hit King Lake.
A man that I worked with lives in King Lake.
I spent the next hour calling everyone that I know to ask if they had seen him. It took me one hour to get details from a college and that was a terrible hour.
I cannot begin to understand what the impact would have been on me if I had discovered that he died in the fire.
As geeks we escape we live in worlds created by people as an alternative to the one we live in. But today reminded me that there is darkness in our world and that each and every person that walks the earth has a responsibility to support his fellow man.
I cannot afford to give money but I am a universal blood donor so I will be giving blood this week.
It is only a small thing but I hope that the one thing I do can make a difference to someone worse off than me

Edward I am sure that everyone here appreciates just how much people in other countries including the US care about us and the level of pure human concern that this event has generated.
You guys have suffered through a fairly hairy summer and it looks like we are going through the same thing. It doesnt bode well for the rest of 09.
All I can hope for is that this will inspire people to lend a hand to the people in trouble close to home. Think global act Local.
