What I want to see before I die
June 22nd 2008 03:37
In 2000 there was a movie that I was really excited to see. The film was "Mission to Mars". This film for those that havent seen it is in my opinion De Palma's homage to 2001complete with aliens and a large white room and questions as to the origins of man.
While I enjoyed this film and own it on DVD I did feel a little disappointed. If you go back and watch the trailer for the film you could get the impression that this detailed the first mission to mars.
The Trailer
When you see the film all the build up is for the second mission, the first mission had already landed by the start of the film. I was hyped at the prospect of seeing a film that showed the drama and spectacle of the first manned mission to mars. Not that film unfortunately.
When I was growing up my mother would tell me stories of when she was a child and the first man landed on the moon. It was a moment of amazement and wonder and with the disappointment that I had with Mission to Mars I realized that my dream is to see a man land on Mars before I die.
When there are discoveries on Mars Ice on Mars It reminds me of my dream.
But if you look at the space program, under the current climate I may never see a man landing on Mars.
When I talked about Sci -fi TV this is part of that fire that burns in my soul, the need for me to know that man will dance among the stars and see with human eyes, wonders that we cannot even imagine in the early 21st century.
Sometimes on a clear night I will walk outside and look up, the same thing that man has done for centuries and feel that jump in my chest as I think. What is out there? Are we alone? When will we journey among the stars?
Those are the questions that I have in my soul. Not a bad thing for a writer I suppose.
Only the future knows the answer to any of these questions and as of 2008 it is not telling
View of the Week
Mission to Mars
An obvious choice I suppose but at the same time a valient attempt at representing zero g and also looks at the dangers of space travel. Also got to love an astronaut character that grew up with a love of Flash Gordon.
Read of the Week
Red Mars - Kim Stanley Robinson
This is a book about Mars Colonization one of the most highly regarded books to deal with the topic. And yes I have not read this and I was searching for a book that would fit the theme of my blog sorry.
For books I have read that fit vaguely into this theme Foundation - By Issac Asimov the first book I have read where a society is the main character and historians are the heroes. Great book fantastic series.
Game of the Week
Traveler the current version of this classic rpg has been released by mongoose press and having spoken with Matthew from Mongoose I have to say I am excited for the future of this game. This would be a great game with a bit of tweaking to run man's first voyage to Mars
