The greatest fantasy saga you will never read
March 1st 2008 15:17
I want you to take a look at your bookshelf. Grab the your favorite fantasy novel. The best book you can find.
Or better yet go to the nearest book store, find a large thick fantasy novel. Something that just screams buy me. No matter who wrote the book, I guarantee that even the most amazing tale is nothing compared with stories being told in basements, dining rooms, bedrooms and on Kitchen tables all over the world this week.
Stories of drama, action, adventure and swashbuckling.
The same thing will happen next week and the week after that.
And the coolest thing is normal people, people you work with or go to school with are the most inspiring heroes doing great deeds at the drop of a hat.
The tragedy is so many people are missing out.
These people are playing role playing games and every week they get to be cooler than Aragorn , they eat beowulf for breakfast and face dangers that would leave Conan crying like a little girl.
I have been role playing since 1987 when my friend Christian introduced me to a game called Dungeons and Dragons. I played a human fighter who was killed in a fight with Giant Ants.
From that one game I was hooked. I have been playing ever since. Some of the most vivid adventures that I have experienced have come from one simple pass time. A game that I owe the setting for a novel to. ( I would have never created the setting for my novel if I had not created it as a setting for my game first.) So one day someone will pick my book and remember how they fought for the forces of good years before the squire faced the dangers beneath the castle.
One of the things I love about roleplaying games is that you can be any type of character that you can imagine. If you can imagine it, there is a game out there that allows you to play it.
You want to be a Knight in King Arthurs court, Check out Pendragon. You want to be an elven mage mastering arcane energies in your quest for power dungeons and dragons will give you some options.
But it all looks very complicated, I mean where do I start and I don't really want to hang out with comic book guy from the simpsons. I hear you say.
Well the great thing about roleplaying games is that there are heaps of people who are looking for a gaming group and like any social activity there is bound to be people out there who you click with. Also roleplaying games were huge in the eighties so a large number of people in there 30s were once players so you cant get to far in any group of people before you find a role player (either current or lapsed)
So if you have never played a roleplaying game but love fantasy and adventure and wish that you could stand on the wall with Druss and face down the hoards that will claim the land. Might I humbly suggest that you leave a comment in the comments section and I will give you tips on how to find a way to be a hero of the greatest fantasy saga of all time. Yours.

It's All Geek To Me
With my blog I am all about offering insight.
I mean what makes a perfectly normal person play an elf from the grey havens for 2 years.
Because it is fun. Period. That is what I wanted to communicate and maybe you might find it fun too.
