The Future of Film (LINK)

I brought a DVD a couple of months ago. There is nothing special about that. I have hundreds of DVDs in all genres. What is worth a mention is that this DVD was made to be released on DVD.
Babylon 5: The Lost Tales is a DVD that was especially made for DVD film. This isn't a new thing in and of its self. Look at the huge amount of animated films, but what is new about this is that it is a live action continuation of a Television Series not created to be shown on TV or in the Cinema. It was created to be released on DVD. Straight to Video was short hand for poor quality animated production the lesser cousin of the feature.
This was made on a buget, but with high production values.
And now there are more. Stargate has released a straight to DVD film also. I anticipate we will see more of this.
I am left to think about the Future of Film. Right now when they release a film, you have to promote it and then get it shown in the cinema and then finally release it on DVD.
This requires an awful lot of money. This financial capital affects the choices that are made when choosing one film over the other.
This doesn't have to be the rule anymore and I think that we could be in for a new cinema boom unlike any we have ever seen.
If you go to www.trenchesonline.com you will see what I think is the transition point in Cinema. This guy is making a full sci - fi movie and promoting in exclusively on line. It will be released as episodes on the web and at some point they will look at doing a DVD I would imagine.
This is something that has never been possible before. When I say that this is the transition point. This guy had to go out to a quarry and a cave as location shooting. The main reason I would imagine is that It is still the cheapest way to make a film, but as we have seen from Sky Captain, 300 and Sin City you can shoot an entire film in a sound stage.
I don't imagine that it is too far away from the day when me and 5000 will hit the pay pal button based on a trailer that we have seen and finance a film or episode of a TV series that will be shot in a small warehouse.
This will give rise to a variety of programs that we have never seen before just imagine all the books that you love that could never be made now the possibility exists to see A "Foundation film". Something that producers have baulked at because of the potential costs.
The possibilities are endless (A publishing company kicking a dollar in for each book sold to make the movie of the book so that then they can sell more copies of the book)
The real winners will be the fans.
So when we talk about digital media and the future of entertainment, look at the stories that you love to hear, because before you know it, you will be the person green lighting the films that you want to see.
Sounds good to me.
