The Flush of the New

One of the things that I think really defines being a geek is that like sharks we never stop moving. It is not so much about what we are experiencing right now, it is all about what is over the horizon. The best example of this I think is film. Nothing that is showing on at the multiplex can compare with the shiny wonders that I have seen coming in the future.
The following list is far from complete and only a list of live action films.
The Dark Knight - The sequel to Batman Begins
Speed Racer - Live Action based on the cartoon of the same name directed by the Wachowski
brothers (Same people who directed the Matrix)
The Imaginarium OF Dr. Parnassus - Directed by Terry Gilliam and the last film that Heath Ledge worked on. (He was working on this after Dark Knight)
Prince Caspian - The next Narnia film. Loved the fantastic elements in the first film, this one looks to showcase those elements to an even greater effect.
The 2 Lord of the Rings prequels - This is listed as the Hobbit(2010) and the Hobbit 2 (2011) and to my understanding will actually be The Hobbit and then a bridging film between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Guillermo del Toro is listed as directing and Peter Jackson is involved probably as a writer .
Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army - Directed by Guillermo del Toro (again) I am very excited about this film as the visuals from the trailer and production artwork look very cool.
The Spirit - Directed by Frank Miller (Creator of Sin City and major comic book legend)based on the character created by Will Eisner one of the greatest comic book creators.
Watchmen - This film is coming out in 2009 and this is the big one. In every medium there are works that are considered masterpieces. These works are of such genius that there can be no debate about there brilliance. Film has Citizen Kane, The Godfather and Chinatown. Art has the works of Da Vinci and Michaelangelo comic books have Watchmen.
Iron Man & The Hulk - I always get a kick out of seeing super heroes on the big screen.
If you take a tour of IMDB you will see that all of these films are months off. Once they are released I will already be anticipating some other shiny sparkling new masterpiece. This doesn't just apply to live action films. There are animated films that make my heart beat faster (First 3 episodes of The Clone Wars will be in cinemas in august), toys (Hasbro is releasing some very cool star wars figures of characters from the clone wars) Role Playing Games (Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition) and comic books (Final Crisis by Grant Morrison)
I think that for geeks we are always chasing that greener grass and when we get to the hill and see that the grass is not so green, there is always another hill.
I am not saying that this is good or bad, but I think that it is healthy to be honest and admit that I am driven by what I am yet to experience not what I am currently experiencing.

I think that you need to speak to the advertisers and marketers from the 70s, 80s and 90s who realized that if you create a market that is more interested with what they will get than what they have got, they will keep buying.
But that is just my opinion
