The Biggest Loser: Give me the dresses and dancing over the pain of obesity any day

My sister says she can’t watch RuPaul’s Drag Show but she’s a fan of The Biggest Loser. What is she talking about? What about The Biggest Loser is so great? Well, I had to go watch it to see if it compared to Lip-syncing for your life and Sashaying Away.
The Biggest Loser is a show where people who are over weight lose weight. So far it does not sound that exciting to me. I, for one could lose some weight so watching people lose weight…hmmm, Naay. Is it too close to home?
The opening scene of week 9 introduces the 11 original family related couples that started the show. In the opening credits are grueling pictures of these people being “taken to the limit”. Agonizing faces, screams of pain, and yelps of triumphant flooded my senses. So far, I do not want a snack and I am not sitting at the edge of my couch.
Much like RuPaul’s Drag Show, the viewer can become part of the process of the competition by picking their favorites to win. The element of family relationship bummed out a guy out when his mother was kicked off the show. The show has mini challenges just like RuPaul’s Drag Show, although the challenges are based around health not fashion, hair and cattiness.
Elimination is just like on RuPaul’s Drag Show too. On The Biggest Loser the teams have to weigh in. The team that has lost the most weight will not have to go into the Elimination Room and vote off a player. Survivor meets Food Network. The elimination is grueling just like RuPaul’s Drag Show but upsetting in a totally different way. If the queens don’t make it to the next week it’s not their life.
The implications of The Biggest Loser are monumental. My heart broke, as several team members did not lose their weight expectations. One lady cried as she verbally went over all she had done to lose weight. In anguish and despair she did not understand losing only 2 pounds. Ouch! It was not melodramatic, it was desperate and disappointing. It wasn’t the most entertaining hour I’ve experienced.
In all fairness, the show seems to change lives and teaches healthy patterns to the contestants. I was very taken back at the amount of weight loss.
Teaching healthy patterns in an isolated situation is not real life. Our nation is one of the fattest. How can someone with a low income make the low calorie raspberry dessert with the dark chocolate drizzle? They can’t it cost too much. Today, I saw a billboard for $1.59 personal pizza. I could eat a lot of those for five dollar.
It is not just our eating and choices that add to weight gain. It’s our move fast culture and cheaper if you super size me that adds pounds around my belly. I am happy for the people who are getting a jumpstart on the show The Biggest Loser. It reminded me that we are in a you did it to yourself culture. Much is emphasized on the individual not the whole life system. According the New York Magazine’s article, You Are What You Grow, it is well know that our country produces corn and soy as over subsidized crops. articleThese are both turned into processed food sand sugar drinks. This is another blog for sure.
I think you can understand where I am going here. We can have a million Biggest Losers but our country needs to produce excess carrots and collard greens not sugary drinks.
As for my comparison of The Biggest Loser and RuPaul’s Drag Show, I’ll take a little less reality in my reality TV. Give me the dresses and dancing over the pain of obesity any day.
