Secret Origin

July 5th 2008 14:25

Once upon a time there was a young boy. He lived in a remote town in country Victoria with his mum and dad and he went to a small school where the entire student body was below 10 (that's all grades) and he started writing.

He found that he loved writing stories more than anything else in all the world. It was his very favorite thing.

And then life happened and the young boy stopped writing and he grew up into a young man who wanted dearly to be an actor.

That young man auditioned for plays and got some ameture parts.

He would play role playing games with his friends and watch movies and then one day he ended up sitting unemployed in Canberra. He had no idea what he wanted to do and where he wanted to go in life.

Then his mother offered for him to live with her in Melbourne. He had started writing short stories nothing serious but he had some ideas.

He dreamed of pursuing his dream of becoming an actor in Melbourne and acting on the stage. So he left Canberra behind and moved to Melbourne. The problem was that he never did anything about his dream of becoming an actor.

He got older in Melbourne and realized that it was his home and he never wanted to live anywhere else.

Then on an ordinary day like any other he started to write again. At first it was a few words here and there and then in 2002 the man chose his future he knew what he wanted to do and he remembered that boy all those years ago who loved to write and his soul started to burn and writing became his goal.

It was the moment when he knew that he was put on this earth to write.

Of course that man is me. I know big surprise

So now that boy has a blog and he writes an entry every week about a range of geek things and is working on the second draft of his novel.

He has been published. A short story appeared in an anthology (Dragonmount anthology Vol 1) that was nominated for best fantasy short story 2007.

He has a piece of flash fiction that will appear in a post card series. (Probably August 2008) and he has done some copy writing work.

What I have discovered is that he I am only satisfied with the week and my world only makes sense when I am writing. It is what keeps me balanced and what makes my world make sense.

I am lucky to have a partner who supports me and believes in me even when I have set backs. She understands that elemental part of my personality that has to write.

But here is the funny thing. I may loose momentum from time to time and I may doubt the quality of what I am writing, but I wont give up the dream. I can't, I won't.

There are hundreds of reasons why my dream of being a professional writer will never work. Thousands of scenarios that are rational and well thought out as to why I will never achieve my goals. But when you talk about the odds against it you come back to one simple fact. For the thousands who never make it, there are those that do and for me I say why cant it be me?

What if I do make it? Why not try anyway, because the one thing that is certain is that no one can see the future and you never know what may happen.

And if I never try then it is guaranteed that I will never achieve my dreams.

So I go back to the keyboard and write because you never know your luck in the big city, even for small country boys from Bendoc.

View of the Week
The Orphanage
A Creepy movie from Spain that will enchant you with its story. A woman who grew up in an Orphanage as a child and returns to the same place to start an Orphanage of her own. There is so much that I could talk about but I dont want to give anything away.
Great Movie Sure to make my years best for 2008.
