Is School Making Kids Nuts?

June 9th 2010 06:14

As the 2009-2010 school year rolls to an end, society has much to rethink regarding our education system. The documentary, Race To Nowhere, stated “American schoolchildren are in an achievement obsessed public and private education system.” Today’s young people have been pushed to the brink within our educational system. A young person in high school lives in my house and she has felt the pressure of this system, which is described in a rant-like style in her poem below.

The System

I plead to the system let me breath for a second
I promise I’ll take the SAT and ACT and be up for school in the morning,
Please let me breathe

Test suffocate, because the answer was C but A is what I put
And the difference takes a hold of my esophagus and pulls

I should have remembered that rule “a” before “e” except after “c”
No “a” squared plus “b” squared equals “c” squared but I’m too scared to choose that one

One would be the answer but to guess is too soon, this feeling of impending doom please let me lay down

The sound of my crying leaves no resolution
My tear ducts are dry FedExing my tears to the sky so when it rains the whole world would try to understand

“There is an end” doesn’t help
Kelp forests are important
Can’t forget that but I have advance placement
Please, I plead to the system let me remember me

I cant remember the last Friday I spent at the AMC or the last texting date I went on I don’t remember talking on the phone for no reason because phone is to business what fallacies are to realities

I guess I didn’t study for the math test so I’m bound to fail that mess compressing my grade to a C plus

I live from semester to semester my grades aren’t just letters they cloth me
Tell me what college will take me
What university I will get into

2x to the absolute means an -2 and a positive somehow vamos a coer is chow down in French no Spanish

Can’t forget community service, I’ll teach poetry to elementary but I lost their number 323 4713

Help me because the system can define ambiguous but can’t decipher mercy

The system is a whirlwind in a summer calm take that as a metaphor no a simile

Hyperbole means zoom, words like boom and Hiroshima was in 42,

Eat dinner before you do your sit ups then wake up I need a job
My teacher sucks,
I forgot my lunch next to the systems email saying its crunch time

Yearbook is selling key lime pie, I need to donate
Porque means why and that guy called me about applying but not to colleges

My counselor thinks mythology is interesting and I forget to take PE
Which if you put an E in Greek it is a sigma adding up to a series

Gotta take dance class at SMC
Should I go to community college?

I hate those things

My friend had sex last week and just told me
More importantly is a good transition
And the system just laughs
Because furthermore is a better transition to pass

Did I eat breakfast; hot cheetos are sweet if you eat enough
Rehearsals at 4
I don’t smile when I see my friends anymore
They make me feel worst
Because the system makes them seem drunk like a pirate on a bad day seasick

… work in progress
