RuPaul Went Over the Top: Catfights, Eighties Outfits and Fainting
April 29th 2010 07:33
Drama! Just when I thought I had seen it all! Catfights, an eye injury and fainting were all part of the nail-biting grand finale of RuPaul’s Drag Show! According to RuPaul’s webpage website,” The last three queens face their final challenge - shooting the music video for RuPaul's next single "Jealous of My Boogie." Guests include reality star Robert Verdi, make-up artist Mathu Anderson and choreographer Ryan Heffington”.
I was truly on the edge of my seat. The suspense was nerve racking because it was unclear who was going to win the grand prize. My favorite Jujubee was in the bottom twice heading into the finals. I had given up hope that she would pull it off plus Trya Sanchez and Raven were kicking butt. Their outfits were great, performances great, and mini-challenges were on point. It did not look good for Jujubee.
The show was a riot absolute riot! First, the queens had to design an 80’s outfit to wear in Ru’s new video. Jujubee and Tyra were born in the eighties and didn’t have a clue! They were unaware of the eighties blockbuster shows, Knots Landing offical site and Dynasty imdb. How can a queen not watch Dynasty? It should be in the handbook. Raven had this hands down.
A soap opera-like scene was also in the challenge. The queens had to act opposite of Ru! It was too funny and worth a watch. watch here In pure eighties fashion, the queens entered the room to confront Ru, who was dressed in a jumpsuit with the biggest shoulder pads known to man. While the queens were endlessly complaining about the show, Ru stepped up and slapped them! Yeah, slapped them! Of course it was a stage slap but oh so dramatic. Raven took direction and did ok. Jujubee over acted. Tyra has some diction problems and misheard the director. He told Trya to act hurt she thought he said hood. That small misunderstanding made it for Tyra, the director changed the motivation and Tyra knocked it out the park hands down with her hood attitude.
Lastly, the queens had to learn a new dance together and stage a catfight. Yes, a catfight! The choreographer, Ryan Heffington, taught the queens a dance and fight moves. In the final performance, Tyra decided she would fight a little harder than make believe. She took off Raven’s wig twice; bad drag queen etiquette. As the fight continued, somehow Jujubee was poked in the eye with a high heel! This accidental poke left a scare and swelling.
Finally, it was time for the final walk down the runway. Each queen stepped out for her last chance to impress the judges. Tyra was wearing a light lime colored beautiful flowing gown she looked amazing. Raven went for black bows in a short cabaret style dress it was totally smoking. Jujubee’s choice was not so great, poufy on the bottom dress- not so classy looking.
According to discussion: Tyra was not polished but had grown so much; Jujubee lacked fashion sense but was very smart and Raven was very professional and had fashion sense. After a short discussion the three queens were called for the final decision. Juju was let go; she had to sashay away. Tyra and Raven were left as the possible next drag queen. Ru said she did not know whom to pick so the last two queens would have to l-l-lip-sync for their lives! Ru’s new song "Jealous of My Boogie" was played. At this point of the competition, the crown was up for grabs. As the queens took position on the stage the singing started. Before I knew it, Tyra bent over backwards in a move called the “bridge” and was singing upside down! Tyra jumped off the stage and approached the judges. She was charming the hell out of them, smiled widely and vigorously sang. Raven looked demure and was singing but Tyra was turning it up.
The winner was Tyra Sanchez! She fainted! Yes, she started hyperventilating and laid out right on the stage. Raven was freaking out and Ru cracked me up with her concerned statements: ” Do you need a bag to breathe?” , “You are going to be ok, we are going to get you what you need.” and my favorite “ We will put your wig back on!”
Tyra finally got herself off the floor, put on her wig and took her victory walk! Oh, what an exhilarating competition - I loved it!
Hmmm. I wonder what next season will bring?
