Portland Eatathon-First Course

April 9th 2010 06:22

I don’t know if you have ever been on a eatathon but I just took one in the city of Portland, Oregon. I traveled to Portland, Oregon this week to check out the city. While visiting, I had some of the best food this side of the Mississippi! Portland is a hotbed for good eats.

Guy Fieri of the show Triple D, Diners Drive-ins and Dives, has been to Portland and he left a trail for me to follow. Guy is a high-spirited man, who travels around the United States looking for the yummiest, most flavorful, mouth watering, savory food you have ever tasted! Triple D I received Guy’s book for my birthday so when I hit Portland I knew what to see or should I say taste.

“People eating bad pastry makes me sad,” Piper Davis stated as she demonstrated free baking instructions on how to make a rhubarb pie at the Grand Central Bakery in Portland. Grand Central BakeryThis place is a bakery in every name of the word. Guy missed this one, I got this tip from a local yocal. Fresh aromas filled the air as I stood among huge ovens, massive industrial mixers in the cooking space of Grand Central. Piper, a master baker is the co-owner of Grand Central, a locally owned artisan bakery. Grand Central makes some of the tastiest pasties I have ever tasted.

My taste buds were singing because I sampled more sweets than I should have (in several sittings).

I sampled several gigantic cookies that included: the ginger and molasses cookie, triple chocolate cookie (to die for!), and cardamom coconut shortbread cookie (it melted in your mouth).

I had pastries and sandwiches too; I know this is indulgent but so fun and delicious. The pastries were so flaky and scrumptious they melted in your mouth. I also tried the ham pocket, monkey bread muffin, jammer, and cinnamon roll. The sandwiches are made with some of their freshly baked bread—amazing. There are shelves full of a variety of bread. Both meat eaters and vegetarians will be satisfied at lunch here. Everything is baked daily and is fresher than fresh. If in Portland you have to stop by this place. The people are nice the food is so good.

Grand Central Rocks! It has baking demonstration classes and U-bake items that you can buy and bake at home! Wow, what a great surprise find. I am so happy I do not live too close to this amazing bakery.
