Nostalgia

March 15th 2009 12:29

Nostalgia that moment when you look back on something that you loved as a child and you smile it is such a powerful emotion that some people will spend there whole life trying to recapture that magic that they remembered.

Everyone has experienced it when christmas comes around. But for some it is a more powerful motivator.

For me it is that moment I am on Ebay and I will type in a search for Lego or Star Wars figures still something that I buy today but there is an element of Nostalgia that creeps in and also that moment of sadness that I feel when I look back at what gave me joy as a child and now is a different more cerebral rationalized pass time.

I cant buy these things for play now that is an element that I have lost.

If I buy Lego it is an exercise similar to some one who buys modle airplanes I am buying raw material to construct something. Build something that i can look at and admire it is not to play some child fantasy creation and there is a part of me that wishes that I could still do that.

But then I realise that my son is my gateway to such things, he is four and so those doors are starting to open up to him, so it seems to me that we all need Nostalgia to connect with the next generation and admire the freedom with which they enjoy the toys that we give them.

So the next time you see a child playing with a toy spare a thought for the adult they will become and how this moment will be something they will miss when they look back it with affection.

Read of the Week
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende a great book on the end of childhood and the power of imagination. This is a great book better than the movie and a book that goes further than the book ever did worthwhile reading.

View of the Week
Mirrormask a film that really shows what the power of imagination and creativity can give you. Or just re watch Labyrinth The Dark Crystal Goonies Gremlins The Last Star Fighter Flight of the NavigatorKarate Kid or Star Wars

Game of the Week

Play a board game

Dont care what game. If you can do it with your siblings or family even better. Especially with your parents. They may even let you win.
