Isaac Asimov

November 22nd 2008 15:30

In each field or Genre we are gifted with individuals we are gifted with people who stand out amongst the crowd. Those that after they are gone deserve the title of Legend.

Isaac Asimov was one of those men.

He was a man who live at a particular time in human history where man realised many of the dreams of men such as he. Born in 1920 and dying in 1992 Asimov lived to see man land on the moon. The dawn of the computer age and the start of the internet explosion.

All these things were made possible during the lifetime of a man who dreamed big.

He had an extremely prolific career and lived to see his work appreciated and respected.

When I was growing up I had an interest in Space Opera and Isaac Asimov's work seemed too cerebral for me and I avoided it due to a concern that it would be too dry.

But a couple of years ago when I decided to start reading the greats, I brought Foundation and started to read this series. What I discovered was an engaging tale that managed to make a society the main character of the books and told the tale of one man's understanding of man's future and his use of that knowledge to try and create a better future for mankind.

This is grand space opera and a thing of wonder and beauty. It is awesome.

This was but one of many works by an amazing man.

He also created The Three Laws of Robotics and through its invention predicted a ethical code for artificial life that we will one day hard wire all artificial life with.

This post has barely scratched the surface.

I'm with you - I picked up Foundation at a second hand book shop for $3. Devoured it in a couple of days, found it incredibly relevant to global politics now, desperately wished I had bought the other books for $3 too!

the amazing thing about foundation is that it is Asimov's retelling of the rise and fall of the roman empire.

Great stuff
