Do Geeks Dream of Bladerunner DVDs
July 27th 2008 05:47
In the middle of the book Future Noir one of the most comprehensive literary studies of a film ever written. The film is of course Bladerunner.
Bladerunner for those who are unaware is an adaptation of the Phillip K Dick Novel "Do androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" It is the story of a man tracking down Replicants in a dystopian future realized by the genius of Ridley Scott. It asks some key questions about the nature of humanity and poses another key question, can a machine be human?
One of the things fascinates me about Bladerunner the most is the disparity that exists between what popular opinion is now and the initial response to the film when it was first released.
Now it is considered on of the Seminal Sci - Fi films when it was released it was considered a bomb.
We have recently been blessed with the release of the Ultimate Edition of Blade Runner. 5 discs of content with three versions of the film.
But what is the big deal, why this film and not say 2001: A Space Odyssey? or Alien? or Terminator? or ET? (Same year as Bladerunner.)
What makes this film so much more special and worthy of examination? What magical element makes this film shine brighter than many others and cause us to place it a special place above other films?
Not only do we as Geeks hold it up above other films, we also are exposed to the children of Bladerunner in the current sci - fi dystopia that appears in some films.
It seems that Bladerunner was like a drop of ink that has crawled its way up the tissue paper of our culture.
So now I look at the universe of Sci - Fi that we are left with and have to ask a single question. What will be the next blade runner? What film will slam into our cultural zeitgeist? We have caught our breath from The Matrix, recovered from the shell shock following the Lord of the Rings and now we have survived 300 and Sin City what new film will explode our cinematic horizons?
What film will some geek be writing about on a "blog" in 25 years time that redefined the way that we look at cinema?
I cant wait to find out.
Do you dream of Bladerunner DVDs?
Read of the Week
Future Noir This is an exceptional book that is a comprehensive look at the making of this extraordinary film. I have not taken what was presented in the book and put it here as I believe that it is better to discover the gems contained in this fine book on your own. Find a copy you wont be disappointed.
View of the Week
Bladerunner. If you havent seen it in a while it is time to revisit this Sci - Fi Noir Classic. I want to hear why you think this film is worth its place in the Sci - Fi pantheon or not if that is your view.
Game of the Week

A note for my loyal readers
I missed a week. Sorry have been under the weather in the last week or so and not really been able to post, my writing has also suffered from a lack of focus in the last couple of weeks. To all those checking the sight on a regular basis you have my thanks.
Don't forget in the next couple of weeks we have Clone Wars hitting our screens and Force unleashed hitting our consoles.
Thanks Karl
