Books

Each of us has the things that are most precious to us, those possessions that we cannot think of giving up for anything, for some it is jewelry, others shoes. But for me there is only one thing that I would class as irreplaceable.
For me that is my library.
Too tidy to be my library
A collection of books, comics and DVDs that comprise the sum total expression of the imagination that I can afford and have had time to acquire.
I have always found it comforting to be surrounded by books and so have spent the past few years creating my own refuge from the world. Surrounded by my books.
I thought since I had just done a re-organization of the study/library that I would share some photos from my inner sanctum.
This one is still a work in progress. It is my Babylon 5 Book collection. I have 2 more script books to get and have to hunt down 11 Babylon 5 novels (I don't have the good ones)
Next is the graphic novel collection. This is only the comics that appear in graphic novel form and I don't have the smaller works that once appeared on my shelf they now live in comic boxes. Also you may not see it but on the top is my showcase presents Superman a black and white reprint of Silver Age Superman tales very cool stuff.
Finally my writing library a collections of books and magazines that I have brought over the last few years to teach me the craft of writing or are works I use for reference specific to my writing.
As with most people I have not read everything that is in my library (the exception to this rule is the graphic novels if they are in the library then I have read every one.)
One of the first things i do when i enter a house is to check out the library, I am always curious to see what people have on there shelves.
Do they only buy popular books.
This one is easy they will have copies of the following and not much else.
Harry Potter, DaVinci Code, Some kind of generic books, Celestine Prophecy, The Secret, Something by Stephen King, Jamie Oliver books and maybe a copy of Lord of the Rings or fellowship of the ring.
The books live in the lounge room and fight for space with the DVDs.
Or we have those like me who are more focussed and prolific collections, you get a lot of books that cover a few genres or subject matter. I just tend to trust those people more cos I feel that their mind is more active.
When i think about it, I have a silly way of judging people, but then dont we all judge people when we go to their house?
My judgments are based on books.
I'm curious if anyone is following my geek book recommendations, if you have read the books I have suggested and have thoughts please let me know in the comments below.
View of the Week
The Dark Knight Saw opening day but felt that an omission here would be criminal. Sure to be the topic of a future blog post. One of the best movies of 2008. If you have not seen this film don't worry about the hype it is worth the 2 1/2 hours of your time.
Read of the Week
The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester One of the best Science Fiction novels ever written. It is a book about a man who wants to commit murder in a world of telepaths. The novel is so iconic that when JMS created Babylon 5 he named his Psy - Cop after this writer.
Game of the Week
Settlers of Catan
Continuing with this weeks theme of excellence, this is one of the best board games ever created. It is a simple game for up to four players that allows you to use the resources of a random game board to try and create roads and settlements before your opponents. Great fun simple game with just enough complexity to keep you coming back.
For me that is my library.
