Being the Dungeon Master
November 9th 2008 12:13
So I play Dungeons and Dragons. Not only do a play Dungeons and Dragons I run a game once a month. In that game I am the Dungeon Master. As I have said before I have been role playing for a while.
I started in 1987 so last year marked my 20th anniversary as a gamer.
It is a hobby that has given me many hours of joy in my life and allowed me to forge life long friendships. My sister met her husband because I am a gamer and many of my close friends are my close friends because they have played in my games.
So what does a Dungeon Master do?
Well the first thing a DM (Dungeon Master) does is adjudicates the rules. When the players want to do something someone needs to set the chance of success. Roleplaying games are so open ended that the players may do something unexpected and you have to think on your feet.
The second thing the Dungeon Master has to do is create the world. This is the part of being a DM that makes it the most rewarding and endlessly challenging. You can spend years creating a world for your players to inhabit. A place that they can adventure and tell stories better than any fantasy book or movie. That is the goal. Sometimes you succeed sometimes you fail but it is always worth the effort.
The third thing that Dungeon Masters have to do is to teach the game to new players. Every now and then I will have someone join the game who has never played an RPG before. This can be a great opportunity to introduce people to a lifelong hobby or answer that age old question what is that game with the weird dice.
Finally as a DM you get to hang out with your friends and create something that they love to do. It can be endlessly rewarding.
So in a nutshell that is what a DM does.
Read of the Week
Magician - Raymond E Fiest this book is written by a gamer, the world that the book is set in is based on the game world that Ray and his buddies played in for years. It even contains a dedication to the Friday Nighters. His gaming group.
Game of the Week
World of Warcraft This is a game that many lapsed players enjoy. It gives you a chance to create a character and fight monsters and go on quests. I prefer games where the players are all in the same room but WOW is a good way to get a feeling for playing a rpg and earn XP
