Artists

One of the things that I have found interesting is the relationship that we geeks have with artists. This is a relationship that is much closer than in any other community. Geeks tend to latch on to anyone that produces work in our community and adopt it as our own.
It can be a bit startling for actors and artists when confronted with the passion and dedication that we geeks show the things we love. Ask any actor who worked on a Star Wars movie who now goes around to conventions and signs a photo of there character to lines of fans who have cued up for hours.
It is a strange thing.
Take romance novels. Fabio became the famous cover boy for many a romance novel, but ask most romance novel fans (of which there are many) who did the cover of there favorite book or series and the answer will usually be a blank stare and if they take the time to check on the back of the book they will read the name and then the next thing the name will be gone from there memory to be consumed by the latest tale of Dr Papelon and Nurse Sloan as they try to resist submitting to a love that knows no equal.
But as a growing geek my world was filled with artist who were not invisible. Larry Elmore meant It was a good cover. Frank Frazzetta would show you Conan unbound like no other.
Comic Books became the ultimate extension of that with artists gathering fans to them like flies to honey.
Yes I once brought 2 copies of every comic so that I would have one to read and one to keep.
I was an image comics fanboy.
Ahh the enthusiasm of youth.
Now we are in an age of the internet and our relationship to artists has evolved you can now email your favorite writer and if your lucky strike up a conversation.
It is a further evolution of the relationship between artist and audience and makes for a very interesting dynamic.
But we still hold artists in a high esteem they produce the work that we love and we love them for it but now we can email our favorite writer or artist and communicate with them immediately.
But is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Only time will tell
